The 1979 Belmont Stakes was the 111th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York held on June 9, 1979. With a field of eight horses, Coastal won by three and a quarter lengths in front of a crowd of 59,073 spectators.[1] Spectacular Bid , winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, had a chance to win the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing by winning this race, but was unsuccessful. The race went off at 5:39 pm ET and was televised on CBS nationwide.
