Mahmoud Gavan
[edit]Mahmoud Majid Mahmoud, commonly known as Mahmoud Gavan, was born in 1944 in the village of Kalat, part of the Bjil subdistrict in the Akre district of Kurdistan.
Early Life and Political Involvement
[edit]At the start of the Kurdish revolution, he became a close ally of Mullah Mustafa Barzani. In 1966, he joined the party's underground activities with Mullah Shani, Huso Mirkhan, and Qurtas, focusing on the provision of supplies, ammunition, and the collection of vital intelligence.

Reputation and Recognition
[edit]Mullah Mustafa Barzani often stated: "Mahmoud Gavan is the most trusted person by my side." Among the Barzani community and the Peshmerga forces, he was known as the Lion of Barzan or the Son of Mullah Mustafa Barzani.
Internal Conflict and Injury
[edit]In 1981, during the attempts by enemies to seize Mullah Mustafa Barzani's body, Mahmoud Gavan was actively defending in Shino and was seriously wounded during the conflict.
Service and Honor
[edit]Due to his extensive service and sacrifices for Kurdistan, he was honored with the Barzani Medal by President Masoud Barzani during the 14th Congress of the Kurdistan Democratic Party on November 4, 2022.
Legacy
[edit]Mahmoud Gavan is still alive and continues to reside in his native village of Kalat.
