Descartes a Kant is a Mexican rock group from Guadalajara, Jalisco. Formed in 2001,[1][2][3][4] it is characterized by its musical style blending different musical rhythms and its performances.[5]
Biography
[edit]The group was formed in Guadalajara in 2001, the year it joined the country's independent music scene,.[6][7] They adopted their name by combining two admired philosophers: René Descartes and Immanuel Kant,[3] whose opposite philosophical works marked the modern era. After developing a few years in the local scene and after several formation changes, Descartes a Kant released a first album, Paper Dolls, in 2007 at the Inolerance label.[1]
Their musical style is qualified as "bipolar-schizoid" alternating soft and melodic tones with noise and stridence.[1][8] The group includes elements of noise, rock 'n' roll, surf music, electronic music, bossa nova and jazz. Their concerts are generally theatrical, their members generally wearing specific outfits.[1]
Il Visore Lunatique, their second album, was released in 2012. Some songs from the album include Suckerphilia, Buy All My Dreams and You May Kiss The Bride. In the third album, Victims of Love Propaganda, recording and production were carried out by Steve Albini, who worked on albums for Nirvana and Pixies.[9]
The band participated in festivals such as Vive Latino, Indio Emergente, Maquinaria Fest, SXSW, Rock al parque, Culture Collide, White Nights, and Manizales Grita Rock y Quimera. In Mexico, it played with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Stereo Total, El Otro Yo, Explosions in the Sky and The Melvins.
