When electrification between Augsburg and Stuttgart was completed 10 new locomotives were constructed by the DRG, They later went to Central Germany to replace the older E 17s which went to Southern Germany. The first locomotive number E 04 01 arrived in 1932 and was followed by the other nine in 1933 a test run in 28th of June of that year showed E 04 09 reaching a speed of 151,5 kmh. Numbers E 04 09 and E 04 10 were later modified to run at a speed of 130 kmh in a further 13 were delivered in late 1935 following the modifications done to the aforementioned E 04 09 and E 04 10.[1] in 1943 number E 04 01 - E 04 16 were put in storage leaving only 7 in service. 16 locomotives were later acquired by the DR after WW2 while 7 went to the DB and were classified as the class 204 on the DR and were cclased as the class 104 on the DB. The last locomotives on the DDR, numbers 204 005, 204 007 and 204 015 were retired in 1977. While the class lasted til 1982 on the DB.
