Climate change in Åland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Climate change affects the environment of the Åland in various ways.

Greenhouse gas emissions

[edit]

Greenhouse gas emissions in Åland amounted to 199,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2020 and 225,000 tonnes in 2019.[1]

Impacts

[edit]

Insects

[edit]

Increasingly, there are new species of insects being found in Åland, because climate changing is making Åland more hospitable to insects.[2]

Viticulture

[edit]

It is increasingly possible to grow wine in Åland, due to climate change making Åland more hospitable to grapevines.[3] One of the largest farms is near Mariehamn, where as of 2022, 900 vines grow.[3]

Response

[edit]

Public transport in Åland was switched to use a proprietary form of biodiesel, produced by Neste.[4]

In 2015, one fifth of energy used in Åland was produced by wind power.[5] The Government of Åland announced plans to use the disused mine shafts of Lilla Båtskär as a store of energy through hydroelectric power.[6]

In 2021, the Government of Åland approved the construction of wind turbines, which would if fully realised correspond to approximately 45% of Finland's total energy production in 2019.[7] In 2023, the Government of Åland started to develop an energy island, with wind and hydrogen projects.[8]
