The Civico Liceo Linguistico Alessandro Manzoni is a high school in Milan, Italy. Founded in 1861 as an all-girls' school, it was renamed after poet and author Alessandro Manzoni in 1886 and began accepting boys in 1978.

Students are admitted through exams, typically held in December of their final year of middle school. In 2011, La Repubblica reported a record 1,100 applicants for 250 available places (potentially to be reduced to 220 by the government).[1] In 2013, Corriere della Sera reported a 6:1 applicant-to-place ratio.[2]

The institute is a school run by the Milan municipal administration (Labor, Youth, and Sports Directorate, Labor and Training Area) and falls under the jurisdiction of the relevant department.

The school's archives preserve the prolusion that Paul VI gave to the students and the gift of the Queen of Italy to the female students in 1894.

Activities

[edit]

Liceo Linguistico Manzoni hosts and organizes the Milan Model United Nations.

It also hosts Hanban Confucius Institute and participates in UNESCO Days.[3]
