Christina Corpus (born 1970 or 1971 (age 53–54)[1]) is the current and 26th sheriff of San Mateo County, California.[3] Elected in 2022, Corpus is the first Latina and first woman Sheriff of San Mateo County.

Early life and career

[edit]

Corpus's parents were immigrants from Nicaragua and Mexico. Corpus was raised by a single mother.

In 1995, Corpus became a receptionist at the San Mateo County Department of Child Support Services. She became a caseworker and then successfully applied to be a corrections officer with the sheriff's office, including in the Women's Correctional Facility.[2]

Corpus was promoted to sheriff's deputy and advanced through the ranks to captain. She was commander of the North Fair Oaks bureau, the K-9 unit, operations bureau, and others. In 2022, she was a captain and chief of police for the city of Millbrae.[4]

Sheriff

[edit]

In 2022, Corpus ran for Sheriff against the incumbent Carlos Bolanos. In the June 2022 primary election, Corpus won 57% of the vote, winning the contest outright and avoiding another election in November 2022.[5][6] Corpus assumed office on January 3, 2023.

In July 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Corpus to the Board of State and Community Corrections.[8][9] She resigned on November 21, 2024.[10]

In November 2024, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors released an independent report by retired judge LaDoris Cordell investigating allegations against Corpus.[11] The allegations included abusing power, creating a toxic work environment, retaliation, and using homophobic and racist slurs. It also found that she eliminated a sworn law enforcement position to create a special job paying more than $200,000 for her unqualified boyfriend Victor Aenlle while repeatedly lying about their relationship, concluding "[I]t is also clear that that relationship has led Sheriff Corpus to relinquish control of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office to Victor Aenlle, someone who has far more experience as a Coldwell Banker associate real estate broker than he has in law enforcement. Indeed, Aenlle has no experience running a law enforcement agency."[12][13] Corpus denied the accusations but declined to provide testimony under oath or answer questions.[14] Allegations about Aenlle's conflict of interest and unauthorized carrying of a Sheriff's badge were denied by Aenlle.[15]

In November 2024, minutes before the release of the independent report, Corpus ordered the arrest of the president of the Deputy Sheriff's union.[16] In December 2024, the County district attorney threw out the case and said that there "was no basis to believe any violation of law had occurred", and that the individual should not have been arrested.[16]

In November 2024, all five captains in the Sheriff's Department called on Corpus to resign,[17] as did her sergeants and lieutenants.[18]

On December 3, 2024, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved a special election for March 2025 where a majority of voters could give the Board of Supervisors the authority to remove the Sheriff from office.[19] The authority would require four of the five supervisors to vote to remove a sheriff "for good cause."[20]

On January 6, 2025, Corpus filed a $10 million claim against San Mateo County accusing the county of discrimination, harassment and defamation.[21] The county responded that the claim lacked any merit.[22]
