CJ Darcl Logistics Limited (Hindi: सीजे डार्सल लॉजिस्टिक्स लिमिटेड, Korean: CJ다클로지스틱스리미티드) is an Indian logistics company which provides integrated logistics services.[1][2]As of March 31, 2024, the company, which has its headquarters in Gurugram, Haryana, has over 187 branch offices throughout India.[2]
The company was founded by Mr. Krishna Kumar Agarwal with his three brothers, Mr. Darshan Kumar Agarwal, Mr. Roshan Lal Agarwal, and Mr. Narender Kumar Agarwal in 1986 under the name Darcl Logistics.[3]
In August 2017, Darcl Logistics came into a share holder agreement with CJ Logistics from South Korea and subsequently got named as CJ Darcl Logistics Limited.[4][5]
CJ Darcl Logistics provides a broad range of services, such as freight forwarding, project cargo management, road, rail, coastal shipping, and contract logistics, as well as multimodal transportation solutions.[6][7]
History
[edit]In 1963, the father of Mr. Krishan Kumar Agarwal laid the groundwork for the logistics business, which got closed later on. Mr. Krishan Kumar Agarwal started building it from scratch in the 1970s with a small transportation business. The business started out as a proprietorship and later formed into a partnership operating five or six branches from Delhi to Guwahati for small retail transportation.[3]
In 1980, the company got its first corporate client named the Assam Oil Company situated in Digboi.[3] The company was reorganized as Delhi Assam Roadways Corporation Pvt. Ltd.( DARCL) in 1986 and became a public limited company in 1988.[8]
The business grew in 1990 with the addition of Jindal Group & IPCL as the company's customers. The company expanded its branch network across PAN India in 1995.[3]
With an emphasis on rail transportation amplification, the company obtained a license to operate container trains in 2006. During the association's early stages, IDFC Private Equity partnered with the business in 2007 by purchasing one-third equity stake and in 2016–17, IDFC Private Equity sold its whole equity stake.[3]
The company's name was changed to "Darcl Logistics Limited" in accordance with a special resolution passed by the shareholders on February 16, 2010 to enhance the company's brand value because a shorter name is easier to recognize. On February 23, 2010, the RoC issued a new certificate of incorporation.[9][10]
In August 2017, CJ Logistics Limited, one of the global logistics players based in South Korea teamed up with Darcl Logistics with 50% equity participation. Subsequently to this, the name of the company got changed to CJ Darcl Logistics Limited.[11][12]
CJ Darcl Logistics Limited and Tata Motors Limited inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in October 2024 to improve and expand the fleet of vehicles and investigate possibilities for logistics services.[13][14]
Specialization
[edit]The company specializes in multi-user warehouse facilities at strategic locations.[15]
Along with storing goods in warehouses, the company services also entail maintaining[16] product shelf life and mixing, packaging, cross-docking, barcode scanning, order fulfillment, and other auxiliary services.
Industries
[edit]CJ Darcl serves the logistical requirements of various industries including metals and mining, chemicals, petrochemicals, oil and gas, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), automobiles, e-commerce, pharmaceuticals[17], and consumer durables.[18][10]
Business segments
[edit]In 2021, the bulk and full truck load (FTL) transportation segment accounted for almost 80% of the company's revenue. About 17–18% came from multimodal transportation, with project freight and other segments accounting for the remaining 3–4%.[19] As of 2021, the company handles about 2,000 FTL consignments daily throughout India and deals in road, rail, air, and coastal/barge transportation, freight forwarding, warehousing and distribution, and contract logistics.[10] By 2027, the company is aiming to become India's No. 1 Total Logistics Service Provider and is relying on the experience of its Korean partner CJ Logistics to establish itself in the new markets.[19][20]
Opportunities
[edit]In order to achieve zero carbon emissions, CJ Darcl took a step towards sustainability by pilot launching its first electric vehicle (EV) for intra-city cargo movement in Bengaluru (Bangalore).[21]
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) granted CJ DARCL Logistics Ltd. a noteworthy Letter of Acceptance[22] (LoA). Under this contract, Grade Head Hardened Rails[23] would be transported from the manufacturer's facility to the DMRC shop by CJ Darcl Logistics.[24]
Partnerships
[edit]CJ Darcl Logistics leased more than 125,000 square feet (11,600 m2) of warehouse space from IndoSpace's Narasapura Industrial and Logistics Park for a span of nine years.[25][26]
CJ Darcl Logistics partnered with Netradyne[27] in 2023 to achieve its objectives of enhancing driving behavior through automated driver monitoring using AI-based safety technology solutions.[28][29]
Gender diversity
[edit]In 2023, the organization employed nearly five times as many women in 2021.[30]
Sustainability initiatives
[edit]In 2024, CJ Darcl carried excavators via rail, from Chennai to Ballabgarh in Haryana on specialized rakes via the Indian Railway network to demonstrate their dedication towards efficiency and sustainability.[31][32]
In an effort to use alternative fuels for both short- and long-distance cargo delivery, CJ Darcl unveiled its first electric vehicle for intra-cargo movement in Bangalore in June of this year.[33][34]
The company has also announced its future intentions to embrace sustainable practices like AI and IoT in e-mobility and to use creative solutions to lower carbon emissions.[20][35][36]
Technology initiatives
[edit]AI-powered dashcams were installed throughout CJ Darcl's fleet, allowing for real-time communication with drivers, route optimization, and behavior monitoring.[36][37]
By implementing a cloud-native Transport Management System (TMS), CJ Darcl transformed its business practices with its "technology-first" approach.[37]
