Bishton is a linear hamlet in the Borough of Stafford in Staffordshire, England. It is located midway between Stafford and Rugeley. It is also close to the Cannock Chase and Shugborough Hall. The hamlet is best known for Bishton Hall, a Grade II* listed building[1] and an active wedding venue and tourist destination.[2] The hamlet falls under the Colwich Parish. It is adjacent to the villages of Colwich and Wolseley Bridge.

Bishton Hall

[edit]
Bishton Hall

Bishton Hall is an 18th-century Grade II* listed manor house on Bellamour Lane. [3] Formerly used as a school, it is now an auction house. [4]

Transport

[edit]

The River Trent and Trent and Mersey Canal bypass the hamlet to the south, and the Trent Valley Line bypasses to the north.

Name origins

[edit]

Despite its name being commonly associated with the hall, Bishton also lends its name to a road "Bishton Lane" and a small scattering of houses. According to University of Nottingham, Bishton's name likely comes from the words:

  • biscop (Old English) A bishop.
  • or
  • tūn (Old English) An enclosure; a farmstead; a village; an estate.[5]
