Bangladesh Islami Chhatri Sangstha (Bengali: বাংলাদেশ ইসলামী ছাত্রী সংস্থা, lit. 'Bangladesh Islamic Students Association')[3] is the female student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.[4][5][6]
Just like Islami Chhatra Shibir which is Jamaat's male student wing, Chhatri Sangstha also has committees in schools, colleges, and madrasas, as well as in public and private universities, medical colleges, thanas, districts, and metropolitan areas.[7]
The group reportedly had 8,000 members & supporters and 112 units and branches throughout the country.[2]
The group was under severe pressure during the previously ruling Awami League regime since 2009.[8]
History
[edit]On 15 July 1978, the Bangladesh Islami Chhatri Sangstha was formed by 11 people from Eden Mohila College as Jamaat's female student front and the second student organization affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami after Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir.[7][1]
On 4 July 2009, the police arrested 3 members of Chhatri Sangstha from a madrasa in Pirojpur, Barisal.[9]
On 17 December 2012, 20 female students of Chhatri Sangstha and the wife of Abdul Quader Mollah, Sanowara Jahan were detained.[10]
In June 2014, 24 members of different wings of Jamaat-e-Islami including Chhatri Sangstha were arrested in Khilgaon.[11]
In November 2014, 3 Chhatri Sangstha members were detained from Shamsunnahar Hall of Dhaka University.[12]
In 2016, orders were made to ban Chhatri Sangstha activities in educational establishments.[13][14][15]
In January 2017, 4 students accused of being Chhatri Sangstha members were arrested.[16]
In February 2017, the local police arrested 6 members of Islami Chhatri Sangstha and they were sent to jail in March 2017.[17]
In June 2017, the Bangladesh Police arrested Tahira Akhter, convener of the Boda Upazila branch of Chhatri Sangstha in Panchagarh.[18][19]
In August 2017, an Islami Chhatri Sangstha leader was arrested in Cox's Bazar.[20]
In October 2017, the Bangladesh Police arrested 21 members of Chhatri Sangstha in Kadamtoli, Dhaka.[21]
In October 2019, the Bangladesh Police detained 14 people including activists of Chhatri Sangstha and a principal in areas of Pabna including Pabna Sadar Upazila.[4][22][23][24]
After the Awami League regime was ousted from power in the Students–People's uprising in 2024, Islami Chhatri Sangstha was again able to hold rallies and made more appearances in educational establishments and institutions.[25][26]
Objectives
[edit]The organization has a 3-point program, which are:
- 1. Widely promoting and spreading the correct concept of Islam among female students.
- 2. Training female students who love Islam to lead a better moral life by organizing them.
- 3. Establishing the dignity of female student society and taking steps to solve various problems[1]
