The Armenian State Symphony Orchestra is a leading symphony orchestra inArmenia, founded by Armenian conductor Sergey Smbatyan in 2006, as the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia.[1][2] It became the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra in 2018.

In May 2024, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of famous French-Armenian singer, artist and composer Charles Aznavour, the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra released a special album "Aznavouriana" together with French-Belgian cellist Camille Thomas under the Deutsche Grammophon label which presents the instrumental arrangements of Aznavour's pieces for cello and orchestra. The music producer and sound engineer was award-winning producer Christopher Alder.[3]

Under the leadership of its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Sergey Smbatyan, the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra emerged with the shared vision of promoting spiritual excellence through music while preserving the rich musical traditions of Armenia. The orchestra is renowned for its diverse repertoire, which spans classical symphonies, ballet, opera, cinematic music, jazz-inspired classical arrangements, and contemporary works.

Performance and Repertoire

The orchestra performs over 80 concerts annually both within Armenia and internationally. Its programming features a balance between iconic classical masterpieces and the works of contemporary composers. The orchestra plays a vital role in introducing young and emerging composers, frequently premiering new works throughout its concert seasons.

In addition to its concert performances, the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra is actively involved in the establishment and organization of four annual classical music festivals, which have become landmarks for the Armenian music scene. These festivals have attracted internationally renowned virtuosos and conductors. The orchestra has also built strong relationships with esteemed contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt, Sir Karl Jenkins, Qigang Chen, and Eric Whitacre, fostering years of collaborative friendship.

Education and Social Engagement

The orchestra places significant emphasis on education and outreach, particularly through the Symphonic DasA program, launched in 2018. This initiative seeks to cultivate an appreciation for classical music among Armenian high school students, fostering curiosity and understanding of the genre. The orchestra also supports vulnerable social groups through charity concerts and complimentary performance tickets, reflecting its strong social responsibility.

International Tours and Performances

A frequent performer in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra has toured across the globe, including notable performances in the UK, Germany, France, Austria, and the United Arab Emirates. Recent highlights include debut performances at Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, and Walt Disney Concert Hall in the United States, an acclaimed concert at Philharmonie de Paris, and a memorable tour of China.

Recordings and Releases

The orchestra has made significant contributions to the recording industry, with several releases under the Deutsche Grammophon label, including a 2024 album commemorating the 100th anniversary of Charles Aznavour, the legendary French-Armenian singer. The orchestra also maintains an active recording presence through its own ArmSymphony Records label, with recent releases including the celebrated film and theatre music of Armenian composer Tigran Mansurian.
