The American College of Toxicology (ACT) is a professional association that provides a forum for the exchange of scientific information in the field of applied toxicology and safety assessment. As of 2024[update], ACT's membership comprised more than 1,150 toxicologists.
History
[edit]Founded in 1977, ACT was established to provide a forum for scientists in the field of toxicology to exchange information between regulators, industry, and academia.[2] In 1979, the ACT held its first Annual Meeting. In 1981, it hosted its first workshop on the topic of reproductive toxicology. The ACT also initiated the creation of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences (ATS).[citation needed] Since 1981, the ATS has awarded the title of Fellow to toxicologists who are recognized by their peers for their expertise and sound scientific judgment.[3] The Journal of the American College of Toxicology was established in 1986 and later became the International Journal of Toxicology in 1999. In 2004, ACT's first course, Pathology for Nonpathologists, was co-hosted with the Society for Toxicological Pathology (STP). In 2014, ACT offered the Advanced Comprehensive Toxicology course, which provides Board-certification hopefuls with a comprehensive series of lessons to help prepare for the American Board of Toxicology exam.[citation needed]
Founded in 1977, ACT was originally established to provide an organization for scientists in the field of toxicology with the goals of advancing the field of toxicology and acting as a forum for the exchange of information between regulators, academia, and industry.[4] Although the initial focus was for environmental concerns, the college quickly grew to encompass all of applied toxicology, with actions including holding a joint symposium with the Society for Risk Assessment, and organizing a task force that would eventually grow to become the Academy of Toxicological Sciences (ATS).[citation needed] The college was also one of the first societies to offer Continuing Education courses and established the triennial Salary Survey.[5]
As of 2024[update], ACT's membership included more than 1150 toxicologists who work in academia, industry, government regulatory agencies, or as private consultants.[citation needed]
Activities
[edit]The college's flagship event is the November Annual Meeting. During the remainder of the year, the college produces podcasts,[6] streams, webinars,[7] and offers training courses in basic, advanced, and specialty toxicology, which are released throughout the year. Besides the Pathology for Nonpathologists and Advanced Comprehensive Courses mentioned above, other notable in-person courses or workshops, which are held live, include Study Director Training, Toxicology for Pharmaceutical and Regulatory Scientists, Practical Reproductive and Developmental Toxicology, and Biologics Nonclinical Drug Development courses. The ACT also publishes the International Journal of Toxicology.
ACT provides a forum for collegiate exchange of information and provides educational opportunities including workshops and courses,[8] as well as podcasts, webinars, and multi-day training courses in basic, advanced, or specialty toxicology which are held throughout the year.[citation needed]
International Journal of Toxicology
[edit]The International Journal of Toxicology (IJT) is the official publication of ACT. It is published six times a year.[9]
