Aleš Pajovič (born 6 January 1979) is a Slovenian retired handball player and current coach of the Austrian national team. He won silver medals at the 2004 European Championship at home soil, which is Slovenia's best result ever.
Playing Career
[edit]Pajovič started playing handball at his hometown club RK Celje. He played his first senior game in 1997. Here he won the league every year from 1998 to 2003 and the Slovenian cup from 1998 to 2001. In 2003 he joined Spanish side BM Ciudad Real. Here he won the 2003-04 Liga ASOBAL and Copa ASOBAL, the 2004-05 and 2005-06 Copa ASOBAL and EHF Champions League. Lastly he won the Spanish league and Copa ASOBAL once again in the 2006-07 season.
In the 2007 season Ciudad Real had issues with registration and had too many foreign players for the league rules, so Pajovič had to watch from the sidelines. He did however stay at the club and hoped that Arpad Šterbik and Siarhei Rutenka would optain Spanish citizenship.[1]
In October 2007 he was to German champions THW Kiel until the end of the year. He then returned to Ciudad Real, and won the Spanish league and Spanish Cup, Copa ASOBAL and the EHF Champions League that season.
In 2009 he returned to RK Celje. In 2011 he joined Austrian side HC Shoppingcity Seiersberg on loan to help them get promoted to the top Austrian League.[2] Afterwards he joined German side SC Magdeburg.[3] Halfway through the 2012-13 season he joined league rivals TuS N-Lübbecke.[4]
In 2015 he joined Austrian HSG Graz, where he became the player-coach in the 2017-18 season.[5]
For the 2018-19 season he retired and became the coach at the club.
National team
[edit]Aleš Pajovič played 181 games for Slovenia.[6]
At the 2004 European Championship he was one of the most important players for the Slovenian team that won silver medals.
He competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics and the 2004 Summer Olympics.[7]
Coaching Career
[edit]In March 2019 he became the head coach of the Austrian national team.[8]
He coached the Austrian team at the 2020 European Men's Handball Championship.[9][10]
