Alan McCredie is a Scottish photographer, author, and lecturer based in Edinburgh. His work focuses on capturing the cultural and social fabric of Scotland through documentary, portraiture and travel photography.
Career
[edit]Alan McCredie is a Scottish professional photographer, writer, and lecturer known for his documentary, travel, and cultural photography. Based in Edinburgh, he has worked freelance since the early 2000s, collaborating with major Scottish agencies and specializing in theatre, television, and editorial assignments.
McCredie gained wide recognition through his long‑term photojournalism project 100 Weeks of Scotland. Launched in October 2012, the series chronicled life across Scotland in the 100 weeks leading up to the 2014 independence referendum. Published weekly in The Scotsman, the project culminated in a book and exhibitions, capturing everything from politics to local culture across urban and rural Scotland .
He is the author or co‑author of several photography books, including This Is Scotland: A Country in Words and Pictures (nominated for a Saltire Literary Award, Scotland the Dreich, Scotland the Braw, and Snapshot, and Cup Tied which was nominated for the 2025 Charles Tyrwhitt Illustrated Sports Book of The Year.
He is a regular photo contributor to Nutmeg Magazine, and many other magazines, including Scottish Field, When Saturday Comes etc.
His work has also been featured in exhibitions such as Scotland the Dreich, displayed at venues in Edinburgh .
McCredie teaches photography at Edinburgh College and is a member of the Documenting Britain photo collective. He was also associated with National Collective, an arts group engaged in documenting and reflecting on Scotland’s civic culture during the independence referendum era
Alongside author Val McDermid he is a regular panel member on Radio 4's Round Britain Quiz[1] representing Scotland.

Personal life
[edit]McCredie was born in Perth where he attended Perth High School, before studying at The University of Stirling and The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He is married to the Scottish actress Jenny Ryan, and has two children. His brother is the Scottish actor Colin McCredie
