2025 Upper Hutt local elections

The 2025 Upper Hutt local elections will take place between 9 September and 11 October 2025 by postal vote as part of nation-wide local elections. These elections will cover the Upper Hutt City Council, a referendum on Māori wards, a licensing trust, a charitable trust and two constituencies of the Greater Wellington Regional Council.[1]
The first past the post system will be used to elect the Mayor of Upper Hutt, city councillors and Rimutaka Licensing Trust trustees for the 2025–2028 term, while regional councillors will be elected using single transferable voting.[2]
Key dates
[edit]- 4 July 2025: Nominations for candidates will open
- 1 August 2025: Nominations for candidates will close at 12 pm
- 9 September 2025: Voting documents will be posted and voting will open
- 11 October 2025: Voting will close at 12 pm and progress/preliminary results will be published
- 16-19 October 2025: Final results will be declared.[1][2]

[edit]Depending on where in Upper Hutt they live, voters will also vote in concurrent local elections for the:
- Greater Wellington Regional Council[6]
- covering the whole of the Te Awa Kairangi ki Uta / Upper Hutt Constituency to elect 1 regional councillor
- as part of the Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui Māori Constituency to elect 1 regional councillor
- Rimutaka Licensing Trust, and/or
- Hutt Mana Charitable Trust.[7]
