The 2024 Syrian coup d'état is a failed coup attempt by Republican Guard against in Damascus.
Background
[edit]In the 2024 Hama offensive, the Syrian Arab Armed Forces retired which angered the Republican Guard and they planned to stage a coup.[3][4]
The coup
[edit]During the night of 30 November 2024, reports of sporadic gunfire and explosions where heard across the Syrian capital of Damascus but primarily centered around the Kafr Sousa, the general staff and state media building.[2] At the same time the Syrian Arab News Agency was turned off the air.[2] Local sources reported that Brigadier General Hassam Louka, chief of the regime's general security directorate, attempted to stage a coup while Bashar al-Assad had fled the country for Russia.[2] Louka, and the Republican Guard would be opposed by the 4th Armoured Division, led by Bashar al-Assad's brother Maher.[2]
