In the first half, Carlisle conceded an own goal credited to Jon Mellish in the 34th minute. The score stayed that way until late in the game when Carlisle's Omari Patrick netted a goal in the 84th minute to tie the match at one goal a piece. The game went to extra time, but remained level, requiring penalty kicks.
In penalties, both teams made their first attempts. Ryan Rydel missed the second attempt for Stockport County, and that proved to be the difference after every other kick was made for both teams. Carlisle United won promotion after the shootout.
