- For the Copa Conmebol 1997, one team qualified: the runner-up of either the Apertura or Clausura tournaments with the highest accumulated points. As Guaraní, the runner-up with the highest points, qualified for the Copa Libertadores, their spot was taken by the other runner-up (Sportivo Luqueño).
Relegation
[edit]Accumulated points
[edit]The accumulated points of a team are the sum of those earned in the first phase of the Apertura and Clausura tournaments of 1996. These points determined, at the end of the first phase of the Clausura tournament in 1996, the relegation to the Second Division of the team that finished last in the standings.
