Gangster territories in 1920s Chicago
[edit]- Request
I'm after an updated copy of the map that is shown at https://www.newspapers.com/article/chicago-tribune-1920s30s-gangster-map/174851196/. It's taken from The Chicago Tribune of 16 February 1936, so technically still in copyright, thus the need for a fresh copy. There's a version at http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/1768.html, which is a lot cleaner, with much of the superfluous nameing taken away, which is also what I'm after. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 19:51, 19 June 2025 (UTC)

- Hi! I was wondering if someone can kindly please vectorize the flag and coat of arms of Provisional Government of Saskatchewan? The flag was designed by Louis Riel and the description of the flag by Father Vital Fourmond (who was a witness to the provisional government's proclamation on 19 March 1885) is found on both pages linked above. The flag consists of the design of an old flag of France with a blue heraldic shield with three Fleurs-de-lis though Riel altered this design by placing the Immaculate Heart of Mary (a Catholic symbol) on the shield. Although Father Fourmond described just the flag, it appears that by using a design with a heraldic shield, Riel had also created the coat of arms for the provisional government even if it wasn't his intention. The coat of arms on the PNG version of the flag uses a Sodacan-style for the shield and Fleurs-de-lis, the Immaculate Heart on the PNG version uses File:Immaculate Heart of Mary.svg but the design of that clashes with the Sodacan style for the shield and Fleurs-de-lis so I ask that for the SVG version, a Sodacan-style version of the Immaculate Heart is used instead. I have added SVG Sodacan-style versions of the designs to use as bases so the request can be done more quickly. Thanks in advance! -- 109.77.208.221 (talk) 22:21, 30 June 2025 (UTC)

- The current image is at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:3-phase_flow.gif. Unfortunately it is a GIF and has English descriptions. It is used on many pages, but the Afrikaans Wikipedia would like to use a version with Afrikaans text, as follows:
- "3 Fase Transmissielyn" should become "Driefase transmissielyn"
- "3-Phase Generator" should become "Driefase generator"
- "3-Phase Load" should become "Driefase las"

- Is it important that it is animated? If not, I can remake it as a multilanguage SVG. cmɢʟee⎆τaʟκ 23:00, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- P.S. Alternatively, just remove the labels entirely. They don't seem very useful other than to indicate that the left side is the generator and the right side is the load, but that can be stated in the caption. cmɢʟee⎆τaʟκ 23:03, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
- User:cmglee, we would prefer the animated version otherwise a SVG file with the caption is acceptable. Having no captions is meaningles, my wife being a teacher - I know how important the captions are! Thanks for looking at our request. Regards. Oesjaar (talk) 11:00, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

- @Oesjaar: Perhaps I should clarify what I meant by caption: in this thumbnail, the caption is the text "The caption", whereas I consider the text L1 to L5 labels.
- Whereas captions are easily specified in the wikitext of the thumbnail, it's a large effort to modify the labels in a GIF animation as
- They are bitmaps, so one can't just type the new translation, and
- It has to be done on every frame, and correctly aligned to avoid jitter.
- Thus, I would recommend
- Using language-neutral labels (1, 2, 3...), or
- Eliminate the labels and either
- Describe it in the caption ("the left side is the generator and the right side is the load") or
- Arrange the text in a table (only works for some images):
Driefase transmissielyn | ||
Driefase generator |
Driefase las |
- cmɢʟee⎆τaʟκ 12:27, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks @Cmglee: The table version looks great. I've tried to place it in the article, but can't get the text to align around it as before. Can you explain, or show, how this would work? Thanks, Greenman (talk) 21:21, 8 July 2025 (UTC)

- P.S. May I suggest putting the transmissielyn label at the bottom and the two generator and las ones on top so that
- The latter are closer to the objects depicted
- The blue transmission line spans the entire width of the former label
as in this thumbnail? cmɢʟee⎆τaʟκ 11:55, 11 July 2025 (UTC)

- Hi! I was wondering if someone can kindly please the coat of arms of New Castle, Delaware (which is displayed on the flag) is uploaded as a separate file. The coat of arms is a heraldic shield split into four corners that displays the flags of four countries which have all controlled New Castle over the years. On the top-left: the Netherlands. On the top-right: Sweden. On the Bottom-left: Britain (unusually they are are represented by the "Flag of Great Britain" that was used at the time of their control rather than the modern day Union Jack, especially considering New Castle represents the Netherlands with its modern day flag rather than its historical one). On the bottom-right: the United States, which New Castle is currently part of (this part uses a version of the Great Seal of the United States rather than the flag). I'll be grateful to see this done. Thanks in advance!-- 109.77.208.221 (talk) 15:47, 6 July 2025 (UTC)

- Hi! Today I'm asking for someone to kindly vectorize the flag of the new religious movement Falun Gong. The flag can be seen here https://www.fotw.info/flags/cn_falun.html. The flag taller than wide and has a light-blue background. The logo of Falun Gong is near the center of the flag but is slightly closer to the top. Below the logo, and further to the bottom to the top, are three Chinese characters that make up the group's motto and below them, the translations of those characters. On the left is the character "真" and below it is the translation "Truthfulness". In the middle is the character "善" and below it "Benevolence". On the right, the character "忍" and below it, "Forbearance". Can someone please do it? I'll be grateful to see it done. Thanks in advance! -- 109.77.208.221 (talk) 20:05, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- This isn't their flag; a quick search shows they use a variety of flags and banners, primarily at demonstrations. What you're showing is based on a photo from a reporter from 2000. Currently, I see a variety of flags, mostly in the traditional Chinese style (colored triangles with sharp edges) and full of various inscriptions. I can create this graphic, but I don't see a use for it. If you're interested, look for something more standard. Swiãtopôłk (talk) 19:30, 28 July 2025 (UTC)
- Ok then. You can do the flag if you like. I just took this request from a list made by User:Germenfer of flags needing vectorization by found by clicking here. I was just trying to take some off the list. Thanks for reading!!! --51.37.55.11 (talk) 15:44, 29 July 2025 (UTC)

Correction for cellular respiration pathway equation

Cellular respiration - mitochondrion

- Cellular respiration
- Request
- The red box at the bottom right below the mitochondrion says "6 H2O", which might be confusing especially since the equation is very small and says "½O2 + 2H+ + 2e−", when we know that one O2 becomes two H2O. My request is to forego the "½O2" (make it whole), make the "2" protons and electrons into "4" instead (because the electron transport chain already has two "2e−"s coming together before this point), and make it so that 6 O2 results into 12 H2O instead of 6. -- CheckNineEight (talk) 05:09, 27 July 2025 (UTC)

- What about other multipliers e.g. for ATP, Pyruvic acid and CO2. Do other items e.g. glucose and acetyle need multipliers introduced? cmɢʟee⎆τaʟκ 12:07, 27 July 2025 (UTC)
- Good catch! The whole thing is for one glucose, so it's good as is. "Acetic acid" should rather be "Acetate", and it is 2x – same goes for Acetyl CoA. And "Pyruvic acid" should actually be "Pyruvate". So, from one pyruvate to a complete citric acid cycle, that gives off 3 CO2; there's two of them in the diagram, so that equals 6. CheckNineEight (talk) 12:32, 27 July 2025 (UTC)
- If so, as a layperson, having a number before unfamiliar terms like "Acetyl CoA" might cause me to think that there's a substance named "2 Acetyl CoA", like "2-propanol". As such, I think the current multipliers are clearer. cmɢʟee⎆τaʟκ 14:05, 27 July 2025 (UTC)
- Alright. (And, I mean, the original already has "2 pyruvate" in it; and I doubt that confusion can happen, because there's no hyphen between the number and the word.) How about using "(2x)" in parentheses and an X or a multiply symbol, placed either before or after the substance name? That, or it was probably meant to be interpreted as taking from one pyruvate anyway, but then "6 CO2" wouldn't make sense in that case. CheckNineEight (talk) 15:01, 27 July 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, the 2 pyruvate might also mislead (I suppose having 2 arrows pointing to it alleviates it a bit). I don't know of a good solution. "(2x)" would lead to inconsistencies with H2O etc and having it on all might be excessive. Perhaps a question for Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Science? cmɢʟee⎆τaʟκ 22:53, 27 July 2025 (UTC)
- I think two arrows should do it. CheckNineEight (talk) 23:05, 27 July 2025 (UTC)
- I mean it's not that complicated. Do we really need to go to the reference desk? It's a straightforward thing to resolve. Just double the arrows between "pyruvic acid", "acetic acid" and citric acid cycle; or better yet, let's just stick to the original plan of just correcting "6 H2O" into "12 H2O" and changing the equation (½O2 + 2H+ + 2e−) accordingly. CheckNineEight (talk) 00:06, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
