- Reason: I don't want my Wikipedia stuff to appear when people type my name (initial + last name) into Google (or other search engine). Currently, if we put quotes around it, it pops right up :( Even without, just not as many. My new name doesn't pass the AntiSpoof check, however, I don't think anyone has a username identical to mine (well, except for the one I currently have), nor are there any "famous" users worth impersonating, so it shouldn't matter. Not done As per https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/plugins/gitiles/mediawiki/extensions/AntiSpoof/+/refs/heads/master/i18n/en.json#26, usernames cannot include characters from multiple writing systems. Your username contains a mix of scripts: Ј (Cyrillic), е (Cyrillic), and ո (Armenian), while the rest are Latin characters. Please use a single script. – DreamRimmer (talk) 16:26, 10 February 2025 (UTC)
- But is it actually not possible to change it via this link, or is it just an automated check to filter out names that are likely to impersonate other/"famous" Wikipedia users? (Mine isn't) You'd think that human renamers could override that restriction, right? Lines 28 through 31 certainly indicate so:
"antispoof-ignore": "Ignore spoofing checks", "antispoof-ignore-help": "Allows users with sufficient privileges to create an account even if its name is similar to that of an existing account.", "action-override-antispoof": "override the spoofing checks", "right-override-antispoof": "Override the spoofing checks"
- The only account at risk of being impersonated would be... my own. By myself.
I'm sure the exceptions exist for a reason... J. Geerink (talk) 21:06, 10 February 2025 (UTC)- As I said above, usernames cannot include characters from multiple writing systems, and I don't see any need to override this antispoof. – DreamRimmer (talk) 05:46, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- Also, please note that this is not about impersonation; it is about how usernames work in the MediaWiki system. That is why there is a caution against using characters from multiple writing systems, so I won't approve this. – DreamRimmer (talk) 05:56, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- "Also, please note that this is not about impersonation"
Oh really? The word "spoof" in AntiSpoof would certainly indicate so:
"2. (transitive) To deceive. 3. (transitive, computing) To falsify." - "As I said above, usernames cannot include characters from multiple writing systems"
Well, they can, you just don't want random users to be able to have names that impersonate other users,
that's why human renamers can override that check. - "I don't see any need to override this antispoof"
So I can have a username that looks like my name, but won't show up in Google (or other search engines), because technically they are different letters. J. Geerink (talk) 07:15, 11 February 2025 (UTC)- If you do not want to be searched, you should change to a more anonymous username. I would not accept this request, as it would be highly inconvenient to ping someone with unusual unicode characters in their username. Also, users with such usernames may face login issues, which is why this particular antispoof check exists. If you do not agree with me, you may ask another renamer to review your request. – DreamRimmer (talk) 14:53, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- If you want to prevent your userpage from being indexed, you can add the
__NOINDEX__
magic word to the page, either directly or by using the {{NOINDEX}} template. For more details, check out WP:NOINDEX. – DreamRimmer (talk) 15:08, 11 February 2025 (UTC)- The issue is moreso that pages on which I happend to be the last editor get indexed, not the userpage itself, but thanks for the tip.
