Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Changing username/Simple
This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including stewards) can consider and carry out, requests to rename accounts to usernames that are not yet taken on any Wikimedia project. While global renamers carry out renames, other users (including bots) help by "clerking" the mechanics of this process. If you wish to help as a clerk, please read the linked page carefully.

Instructions
Once you have decided on the name you would like:
  1. Read this page first. You must be aware of, and understand, all of that information before requesting a username change
  2. Check to make sure this username is not already in use. Do this by searching for the name here. If the name appears in the results, even if on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
  3. Do not create an account under the new name or move/redirect your userpages. We'll do that for you.
  4. Log in with your present username in order to place your request. Renames will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Click here to place your request.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=
    • Do not change anything after CURRENT=
  6. Make sure that you have spelt your desired name correctly, including capitalization and spacing. Save the page. If your request is submitted malformed, please remedy it according to this page.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any questions that may arise regarding your request. Please be patient. It may take a few days for your request to be completed. If you do not answer any questions, your request may be declined due to no response.
  8. Once your request has been completed, please do not remove or change your request. It will be archived automatically by a bot.
  • Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

Important Notes After you are renamed...
  • Due to technical limitations, usernames may not start with a lowercase letter. However, you may use the template {{lowercase title}} on your user and user talk pages, and change your signature to reflect your preference.
  • Underscores and spaces are considered identical by the MediaWiki software.
  • Use of a company, organization, group, website, or product name as a username is prohibited by the username policy.
  • Please understand the implications of using your real name before requesting a name change to it.
  • ... your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited.
  • ... your userpage and any subpages will be moved to the new name automatically. Please do not attempt to move them yourself.
  • ... links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be left behind to your new userpage.
  • ... your request will be automatically moved to the archives in the interest of transparency.

 Not done As per https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/plugins/gitiles/mediawiki/extensions/AntiSpoof/+/refs/heads/master/i18n/en.json#26, usernames cannot include characters from multiple writing systems. Your username contains a mix of scripts: Ј (Cyrillic), е (Cyrillic), and ո (Armenian), while the rest are Latin characters. Please use a single script. – DreamRimmer (talk) 16:26, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But is it actually not possible to change it via this link, or is it just an automated check to filter out names that are likely to impersonate other/"famous" Wikipedia users? (Mine isn't) You'd think that human renamers could override that restriction, right? Lines 28 through 31 certainly indicate so:
"antispoof-ignore": "Ignore spoofing checks",
"antispoof-ignore-help": "Allows users with sufficient privileges to create an account even if its name is similar to that of an existing account.",
"action-override-antispoof": "override the spoofing checks",
"right-override-antispoof": "Override the spoofing checks"
The only account at risk of being impersonated would be... my own. By myself.
I'm sure the exceptions exist for a reason... J. Geerink (talk) 21:06, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As I said above, usernames cannot include characters from multiple writing systems, and I don't see any need to override this antispoof. – DreamRimmer (talk) 05:46, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also, please note that this is not about impersonation; it is about how usernames work in the MediaWiki system. That is why there is a caution against using characters from multiple writing systems, so I won't approve this. – DreamRimmer (talk) 05:56, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Also, please note that this is not about impersonation"
    Oh really? The word "spoof" in AntiSpoof would certainly indicate so:
    "2. (transitive) To deceive. 3. (transitive, computing) To falsify."
  • "As I said above, usernames cannot include characters from multiple writing systems"
    Well, they can, you just don't want random users to be able to have names that impersonate other users,
    that's why human renamers can override that check.
  • "I don't see any need to override this antispoof"
    So I can have a username that looks like my name, but won't show up in Google (or other search engines), because technically they are different letters. J. Geerink (talk) 07:15, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    If you do not want to be searched, you should change to a more anonymous username. I would not accept this request, as it would be highly inconvenient to ping someone with unusual unicode characters in their username. Also, users with such usernames may face login issues, which is why this particular antispoof check exists. If you do not agree with me, you may ask another renamer to review your request. – DreamRimmer (talk) 14:53, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    If you want to prevent your userpage from being indexed, you can add the __NOINDEX__ magic word to the page, either directly or by using the {{NOINDEX}} template. For more details, check out WP:NOINDEX. – DreamRimmer (talk) 15:08, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    The issue is moreso that pages on which I happend to be the last editor get indexed, not the userpage itself, but thanks for the tip. J. Geerink (talk) 18:35, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
