Wiczlino (kashubian Wiczlëno, german Vitzlin[1]) is an estate located in Gdynia, which is part of the Chwarzno-Wiczlino district . In 1973 Wiczlino and surrounding area was attached to the city of Gdynia. The estate to the beginning of XXI century was made up of single family houses, surrounded by meadows, fields and woodland. Since twenty years there have been build a huge amount of modern estates.

Currently the name Wiczlino refers not only to the old centre of the former village but the area around the old village or whole Chwarzno-Wiczlino district[2].

History

The name Wiczlino (Wizlin) first appeared in written sources in 1342. The first known by name habitant of Wiczlino is Paszken von Witzlynn in XV century. He was detained by Gdańsk authorities for unknown reason. Under the Prussian partition the village had many owners and lands were often sold. In 1911 the Wiczlinian OSP (volunteer fire department) were established. During World War Two both school were destroyed, the first in September 1939, the other in 1945 during heavy fighting. In 1973 Wiczlino and surrounding area was attached to the city of Gdynia. From few decades Kashubian roots of the area are being vanished[3].

Hydrology

The Kacza river flows through Wiczlino, it appears near the Gdynia boarder in Szemud gmina from small local swamp system. Its left tributary is Potok Wiczliński, which starts its course in the western part of Wiczlino.[4]
