The Developing Countries WikiContest Gold Belt Buckle
The Developing Countries WikiContest Gold Belt Buckle

Hey AryKun, the Developing Countries WikiContest will be returning for a second year, and sign-ups are now open! The contest will run from 1 July to 30 September, and the objective remains the same: improve as many articles relating to developing countries as you can to help fight systemic bias on Wikipedia.

In other news, we have a new face on the coordinator team this year: last year's sixth-place finisher, Arconning (talk · contribs)! The coordinators would like to extend a sincere thanks to Ixtal (talk · contribs), who is leaving the team, without whom the contest would not exist. After feedback from contestants last year, the scoring rules are undergoing some modifications; the new rules and a summary of the changes made will be posted to the contest talk page shortly.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or contact one of the coordinators: Arconning (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs). WikiCup 2025 July newsletter

[edit]

The third round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 June. This round was again competitive, with three contestants scoring more than 1,000 round points:

Everyone who competed in round 3 will advance to round 4 unless they have withdrawn. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far, while the full scores for round 3 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 4 featured articles, 16 featured lists, 1 featured picture, 9 featured-topic articles, 149 good articles, 27 good-topic articles, and more than 90 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 18 In the News articles, and they have conducted more than 200 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 June but before the start of Round 4 can be claimed in Round 4. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. AryKun, for the second running of the Developing Countries WikiContest, it is now open for submissions. The coordinators have addressed some of the queries at the last contest and we are hopeful that it'll turn out great! If you haven't done so already, please review the following:

Hi, just a courtesy message to notify you in case you haven't seen the Wikipedia:The World Destubathon contest update in the last few days that we've decided to run the full month until the 16th of July. For those who have been too busy to contribute, we would love some help in reaching 4000 articles by Wednesday night! At present we're about 480 articles short!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:35, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Prize claims

[edit]

Hi AryKun, I'm moving this here to avoid wiki drama on the contest talk page.

Hi Dr. Blofeld, did you forget to check my claim in the most STEM articles category? AryKun (talk) 17:16, 18 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Your articles were late being submitted that's why so I reviewed them later than the others but they were written within the legal time frame. Did you add the ones you added to the entries page to the main list earlier? AryKun This isn't really acceptable. You submitted 17 articles over 17 hours beyond the submission deadline. It is supposed to be a rule that all articles are submitted by 23:59.59 of the contest for reviewing on the entries page. Looking at the rules it seems I wasn't clear on that. Can you see why? Anybody could save a hundred articles or something and surprise the leader and submit articles later the next day and win the contest that way. There is no way they can compete against that in the legal time frame of the contest. I'm sure there's an honest explanation for that but you happened to beat Quetzal1964 by 1 article by late submissions. It does look like it was a planned attempt to get the prize by late submissions.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:25, 18 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Dr. Blofeld, I wrote all the articles on the final day and finished the last one at around 10:30 pm UTC. By then it was already around 3 am in my time zone, so I just decided to go to sleep and submit them the next day. The reason I beat quetzal by one article is just that I did just enough articles to get to second place before going to bed. I thought it'd be fine to submit them the day after the deadline for writing the articles since it was okay for the Europe destubathon, my apologies if it looks like an attempt at cheating. AryKun (talk) 19:14, 18 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That seems an honest and reasonable enough explanation Ary, and very commendable for you to work hard until 3am. Next time I am going to have to make it a solid rule that articles have to be submitted for both entries and prize claims by the end of the contest as somebody could potentially harvest a huge number of articles and even win a contest that way. You didn't claim your prize until nearly 18 hours later. The good thing is that you did do them within the legal time frame and I think you are being honest. You'll get the $150 for second place then. Thanks for your hard work, well deserved! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:19, 19 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for competing!
