Move

[edit]

@Conan Wolff: what secondary sources support the move of this species to the genus Zephyranthes? Plants of the World Online, GBIF, GRIN, USDA PLANTS, and the World Flora Online all continue to accept Sprekelia formosissima. We don't accept genus transfers based on journal articles that are not supported by secondary taxonomic databases. I believe it should be moved back. Hello @Peter coxhead,
I think this may be a matter of timing. In the 2019 study, Sprekelia Heist. was synonymised with Zephyranthes Herb., but the type species Sprekelia formosissima (L.) Herb. wasn't formally transferred yet, as the authors wanted to wait for conserving Zephyranthes Herb. against Sprekelia Heist.[1][2] The conservation proposal was deemed appropriate,[3] and was accepted.[4] Since the formal transfer of Sprekelia formosissima (L.) Herb. to Zephyranthes Herb. was only made in December of last year,[5] it may take another while for this to be accepted in the databases.
However, since Plants of the World Online has followed García & Meerow (2020)[6] and has accepted placing the other Sprekelia species Sprekelia howardii Lehmiller into Zephyranthes as Zephyranthes sprekeliopsis (Christenh. & Byng) Nic.García & Meerow,[7] I believe this gives an indication that they will also transfer the remaining species.
Greetings

@Conan Wolff: I understand your reasoning entirely, and it does seem a sensible approach. However, policies like WP:RS and WP:NOTCRYSTAL do strongly imply that we shouldn't use a journal paper to anticipate what the secondary taxonomic databases will do. However, let's leave it for now and see if PoWO does indeed fall in line. Peter coxhead (talk) 14:21, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Peter coxhead,
thank you for leaving the page as it is for the moment.
As far as I know, the transfer was done formally correct, and the process has been completed in December 2024, so the formal move itself is no longer a speculation.
But of course you are right that this step has not been recognised in the databases, apart from the registration of the new name in Tropicos and IPNI.

Hello @Peter coxhead,
I wanted to give you an update that this name change has now been accepted by Plants of the World Online, where Sprekelia formosissima (L.) Herb. is now listed as Zephyranthes formosissima (L.) Z.H.Feng .[8] and the genus Sprekelia Heist. is now listed as a synonym of Zephyranthes Herb.[9]
Greetings, Conan Wolff (talk) 21:07, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Conan Wolff: thanks for the update. It's hard to keep up with all the name changes! Peter coxhead (talk) 08:21, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
