Sailor Gutzler

[edit]

Sailor Gutzler recently was added to this list (survived crash of small plane on Jan 2, 2015). I understand wanting to recognize her, but the list is limited to mass casulty events -- mostly commercial airlines. Some large military crashes also have crept in. However, the fewest fatalities of any other crash on the list is 8 (and even that seems too low for this category). Given the vast number of private plane crashes worldwide, including many with but one survivor, this one will need to be removed. With some regret, and best wishes.

Suggestion: Gender of Survivor

[edit]

Hello.
I suggest the Wikitable the article for another column, which shows the gender of the sole survivor.
It could look like this:

Name Gender
Male
Female
Female

I can't do it myself, because:

  1. I'm a bit too lazy
  2. I am unable to determine the gender of most of the names.

Zhasmina Leontyeva

[edit]

According to [1] and [2], this 3-year-old Russian girl was a sole survivor of Khabarovsk Airlines 463 crash. Should she be added to the list?

  • No, because number of fatalities less then ten (see introduction to table).

Air India 171

[edit]

As he is the current known sole survivor we should keep it - if something else crops up, we can remove it. But as of now he's the only known survivor from this incident. HalfwayAffable (talk) 17:08, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Will be added if the casualties list is confirmed. For now I suggest we just let it be until further information. Either way, it would not be not noticed with this crash potentially exceeding the Northwest no flaps plane crash for the record. SymphonyWizard72 (talk) 17:33, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We do not even have a definitive fatality count for the accident yet. Yes we know that Vishwash Kumar Ramesh survived, but it simply too early to know if he was the only one. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:24, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Even so, sole survivors can succumb to their injuries days, weeks, even months later, and ends up being a fatality. It has happened many times before, and I hope it doesn't happen to Viswash Kumar Ramesh. Adding that we have no fatality confirmation, it's better if we monitor further updates. This is an edit any user could put up easily. Sanhok (talk) 19:30, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to agree, although as he walked out unaided, his injuries do not look life-threatening. If the BBC says he is the sole survivor, it does have more weight than some random post on Twitter. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:45, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is more my thought chain as well - he literally jumped out and walked to medical care and his prognosis is good. Provided evidence to the media directly. HalfwayAffable (talk) 21:14, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

"Youngest sole survivor as of 2025"?

[edit]

It's currently noted that Chanayuth Nim-anong, who was 14 months old in 1997, is the youngest sole survivor to date. But at least 2 sole survivors on this list are younger than him: Ruben van Assouw, who was 9 in May 2010, and Mohammed el-Fateh Osman, who was 2 in July 2003. 73.168.37.85 (talk) 03:42, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

No. Chanayuth Nim-anong was only 1 year old (14 months is 1 year and 2 months). All others were older than that. Dmoore5556 (talk) 04:02, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm well aware that 14 months equals 1 year and 2 months; that doesn't address the issue though. If Chanayuth Nim-anong was 14 months old in September 1997, he would have been born in 1996.
The other two survivors, based on their ages at the time of the crashes they survived, would have been born around 2001 (or possibly 2000 in van Assouw's case), depending on their exact dates of birth, which aren't known to me.
Frankly, we could do without the oldest/youngest trivia altogether. It's unnecessary - and possibly inaccurate. How do we know for sure who is oldest or youngest when several sole survivors don't even have their ages listed here?73.168.37.85 (talk) 04:09, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
When they were born doesn't matter. The ages of the survivors, in the context of the article, were their ages at the time of the incident that they survived. How old they may be now (2025) is irrelevant. Dmoore5556 (talk) 04:37, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That would be more like "youngest/oldest person to become a sole survivor at the time of the incident."
Being the "youngest/oldest [insert event] survivor" implies something else - how old they are now, or how old they lived to be post-event - for example, Yisrael Kristal or Rose Girone as "oldest Holocaust survivor."
The oldest/youngest trivia is misleading and confusing the way it's currently stated - and again, probably doesn't need to be included at all. It's of dubious encyclopedic value and might not even be accurate when the age data for many of these sole survivors appears to be missing or unknown.
73.168.37.85 (talk) 04:56, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Note 'b' under the table already states "Age when the accident occurred", and relevant text in the History paragraph could easily be clarified. That said, whether the article is "better" with or without the History paragraph (which is really just a parsing of maximums from the table) and/or the Notable sole survivors paragraph (notable how?) is worth considering. Other editors are welcome to comment. Dmoore5556 (talk) 05:25, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. As a major contributor to this article, I think it’s very reasonable to include the age of the sole survivors, in particular for casual readers to know as part of the basic identity of each individual. While some of the sole survivors' ages, even names, are not listed, more than half are found and known alongside their nationalities. In my view, I think the historical section would make a good "headline”, but it’s true that on the contrary, other users could argue that it’s just a reiterative description from the already existing list. Also, I’m aware that there are no sources for those. Perhaps when I’ve the time, I could do a rearrangement of everything above.

names and surnames are unknown?

[edit]

16 people survived, but their names and surnames are unknown? Mir.Nalezinski (talk) 08:04, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

12 of those 16 were passengers on Aeroflot flights, while the other four are from 1936, 1939, 2007, and 2010 (the latter two occurring on operators located in the Democratic Republic of Congo)—it's possible that the passenger names were not made public. Review of cited sources and/or contemporary news reports about those crashes may discover additional info that could be added to the article. Dmoore5556 (talk) 19:21, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Living people

[edit]

I've opened a discussion about the inclusion of non-notable living people on this list, at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard#Survivors of aviation accidents. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:12, 14 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
