European Union Police Mission in the Palestinian TerritoriesEuropean Union Police Mission in Palestine – This article doesn't use the proper name, the proper name contains occupied Palestinian territories. Using the proper one is not necessary, only the popular one is. The name would not be confusing or referring to anything outside of the West bank and Gaza strip per this discussion. This means that the title would be more WP:CONCISE and would also use the WP:COMMONNAME. You likely already know this, but this Ngram shows that Palestine is more common. The short name used by the EU is "European Union Police Mission in the Palestinian Territories".[1][2][3] The proper name is "European Union Mission for the Support of Palestinian Police and Rule of Law", which does not contain the words "occupied Palestinian territories". This mission functions in the Gaza strip and the West bank from the best of my understanding, the discussion says that these territories constitute Palestine. Most Wikipedia pages "Palestine" to refer to the "Palestinian territories" or the "State of Palestine". Easternsahara (talk) 02:28, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Easternsahara: In this case, the short name includes the words "Palestinian Territories" instead of "Palestine" as the EU is avoiding recognizing Palestine as a de jure state. Refactoring to "Palestine" would inaccurately imply that the European Union has recognized Palestinian sovereignty by officially attributing this police mission as being in Palestine.
Is there any reason it can't be EUPOL COPPS? Their official website[4] brands themselves that way and that appears to be more common than either of these contrived short names. I think they're trying to brand themselves similarly to INTERPOL so it is easily pronounceable. Chess (talk) (please mention me on reply) 05:15, 22 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
