Name
[edit]There has been some dispute over the name of the article, and there has been claims that it's following a naming guideline that was set forth by a Wikiproject. The standard that is being pointed to is for stations that have basic naming conventions, Swindon, Canterbury East, Pimlico, that have just basic official names. However this station has an actual proper official name, not just a geographical identifier. The station is formally titled "Belfast Grand Central Station" so it should be at that official name. It doesn't need any expanding with railway, bus etc as the name is better formed than a lot of the GB stations. Additionally the naming guideline appears to have just come from a Wikiproject and Wikiprojects do not have ownership over articles, nor can they impose standards for how articles must be, they're just a collection of like minded editors interested in the same thing and looking to improve them. Canterbury Tail talk 11:44, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
- If it's a standard naming convention across all UK stations, I don't see why this station is exempt. The current article title would falsely sell the idea that it's an interchange with some other rail system, even though it's not. I'd be open to the name if even the Glider service stopped at the station, but it doesn't. Your argument of it having a "specific name" ignores examples with those kinds of name, (eg. St Pancras railway station, Birmingham New Street railway station) so I don’t see why this station should be treated any differently. —𝚃𝚠𝚒𝚗𝙱𝚘𝚘 (talk) 14:28, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
- In addition to Wikiprojects not having authority over the article, looking at that WP:UKSTATION guideline, Northern Ireland was only added to the guideline yesterday, by yourself. This is not a long standing consensus in any way, you just decided to add it. It only covered GB, and National Rail, it never covered Northern Ireland until you decided it did yesterday. Additionally the guideline doesn't even account for other station types in the list, only ones that are in the list. Belfast Grand Central Station is an integrated combined bus and rail station which isn't supported by that guideline. Bus stations (not stops, actual stations) are not covered in the guideline. This falls outside the guideline on multiple fronts 1) not being National Rail or in GB and 2) being an fully integrated trans and bus station. Canterbury Tail talk 16:07, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
- Even then, the guideline is still UK stations, not GB stations. I'll settle for it being a bus-train interchange with its current name, but I think that WP:UKSTATION should be updated for this type of interchange to avoid conflict in the future, additionally, I don't agree with your removal of NI Railways from WP:UKSTATION, as I'd say everyone agrees it still counts as "mainline rail." —𝚃𝚠𝚒𝚗𝙱𝚘𝚘 (talk) 17:07, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
- You don't get to arbitrarily change the guideline to your preference and then insist everyone abide by it. Anyway those guidelines are against WP:TITLE which is a policy. Common name, recognisable name, appending railway station to the end of a name when it isn't the name isn't following the policy. Canterbury Tail talk 17:11, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
- Those guidelines are incomplete and completely changing this article off the back of them is jumping the gun a little. Bus stations, whether we like them or loathe them, are a thing and should be included equally alongside the light rail and heavy rail examples in station naming guidance. Grand Central would therefore qualify as a station with full terminus and waiting facilities for two modes of transport, and therefore just get "station" as its suffix. Especially since this article equally describes both the station's rail services and its bus services. Equally, I agree with Canterbury Tail's point on the official name. Most bus-train interchange stations in the rest of the UK are officially branded as 'xxx Interchange' or 'xxx Transport Hub', and their articles on Wikipedia reflect that branding choice (e.g. Barnsley Interchange, Hull Paragon Interchange) rather than have 'railway station' thrown in. Grand Central itself originally was called the 'Belfast Transport Hub'. The 'station' is arguably a branding choice here in the same way. And to pre-empt another argument - the railway platform signs in Grand Central don't have 'station' in them, yes... but then Hull Paragon's platform signs only have 'Hull' on them, with 'Paragon Interchange' being on the signs around the rest of the bus and rail station, and we don't use 'Hull railway station' as the article title. So by that precedent, leave Grand Central the way it is. I appreciate the attention to detail though. ~ ~Karl~ 17:58, 17 April 2025 (UTC) ~
- I'm agreeing with you on the name. I don't think the name needs to be changed anymore. I amn't suggesting we change the guidelines, I'm saying that they should be updated to reflect that train-bus interchanges don't need to be '𝑥 railway station.' Additionally, I meant that NIR should be considered "mainline" as it already is de facto. --𝚃𝚠𝚒𝚗𝙱𝚘𝚘 (talk) 18:36, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
