TVU Networks Corporation is a privately held company based in Mountain View, California, which provides hardware and software products for the television broadcasting industry.
History
[edit]In April 2010, TVU Networks released TVU Player, a live streaming viewer client that provided live television programming to computers with broadband connections.[1] The service was discontinued on February 25, 2013.[2]
Later that year, on September 11, 2010, TVU introduced a mobile backpack transmitter called TVU Pack TM8000. This allowed broadcasters to broadcast live high-definition (HD) signals over the internet, even in low-bandwidth environments.[3] The aggregated cellular transmission technology used in the TVUPack offered an alternative to traditional satellite trucks.[4] The technology behind backpack-style cellular transmitters is known in the broadcast industry as channel bonding, ethernet bonding, or NIC bonding. This term refers to the synchronization of multiple connections that work together to provide a reliable signal.[5]
The company launched a mobile news-gathering app compatible with iOS and Android devices and a cloud-based solution for point-to-multipoint live video distribution.
Gray Television became the first national station group to deploy TVU technology at launch.[6]
In 2015, the company released TVU One, a portable transmitter, as the successor to the original TVU Packs. The newer transmitter is 90% smaller than the first-generation cellular packs.[7] TVU also entered into a partnership with drone manufacturer, DJI, in the same year. The two companies collaborated on integrating their products for drone applications.[8]
Starting in 2020,[9] TVU shifted its focus to the development of Cloud-native applications to address the transition of the broadcast industry to IP from transitional SDI.[10]
On July 11, 2024, TVU Networks announced an alliance with the BBC to cover the 2024 UK elections. This partnership used TVU's technology to deliver 369 live feeds intended to enhance the BBC's ability to provide comprehensive election coverage across various platforms.[11]
