Rehden gas storage facility

(August 2022)

The Rehden gas storage facility in Diepholz district (Lower Saxony) is Germany's largest natural gas storage facility and one of the largest porous storage facilities in Western Europe. The gas storage facility has a capacity of 3.9 billion cubic meters (3.9 cubic kilometers), approximately one-fifth of Germany's existing natural gas storage capacity.
The facility is of great importance for Germany's natural gas supply.[1]

It is located at a depth of 2,000 meters, covers an area of eight square kilometers and is located at a junction of German natural gas pipelines:

The NEL pipeline, the MIDAL (Central Germany Link), the RHG (Rehden-Hamburg gas pipeline), and the NOWAL (Northwest Link: 27 km between Rhede and Stemwede) all converge there.[1]

Wintershall was producing natural gas from the natural gas field there since the 1950s. After natural gas production ceased, the field was converted into a natural gas storage facility and put into operation in 1993.[1]

The storage facility is operated by SEFE (Securing Energy for Europe), completely owned by the Federal Government of Germany.[2]
