Justifiable Defense (Chinese: 正当防卫) is an upcoming Chinese crime and legal thriller series, starring Gao Ye, Zhang Luyi, Bai Jingting in the main roles, set to release on iQIYI and CCTV.[1] The series connects a current murder case with an old 'Campus Over-Defense' case, where the prosecutor once pursued a suspect, but now seeks to exonerate an accused in the ongoing investigation. It explores the legal and ethical debates regarding the law's capacity to ensure individual security.[2]
Plot
[edit]Senior prosecutor Duan Hongshan is handling a case involving a woman who killed her abusive husband in response to domestic violence. Young prosecutor Fang Lingyuan is assigned to assist with the investigation. During the process, an old case resurfaces, complicating the current investigation. They uncover a link to an excessive self defense incident on campus, involving Li Mufeng, Mei Zheng, and Jiang Ting, which Duan Hongshan had handled fourteen years earlier. As the investigation progresses, they uncover deeper connections to Li Mufeng, a key figure tied to the earlier case. Driven by the truth and legal principles, the prosecutors navigate justice, emotional entanglements, legal standards, and the impartial enforcement of the law to reach the final resolution.[3]

[edit]Justifiable Defense has drawn positive response among viewers interested in crime and mystery thrillers.[7][8] Significant anticipation centers on the series’ premise, cast dynamics, and Bai Jingting’s layered character despite his limited screen presence.[9] Zhang Luyi's intense gaze during the interrogation and Bai Jingting's physical transformation to portray a gloomy accused received critical acclaim.[10] In November 2024, the teaser release has sparked widespread discussion about its dark tone and exploration of social issues like domestic violence and school bullying.[11]
Production
[edit]In October 2023, the production house announced that filming for the series had begun.[12] The series is also scheduled to release on China Central Television.[13]
