Sinaloa's 2nd district since 1996

The 2nd federal electoral district of Sinaloa (Distrito electoral federal 02 de Sinaloa) is one of the 300 electoral districts into which Mexico is divided for elections to the federal Chamber of Deputies and one of seven such districts in the state of Sinaloa.[1]

It elects one deputy to the lower house of Congress for each three-year legislative session by means of the first-past-the-post system. Votes cast in the district also count towards the calculation of proportional representation ("plurinominal") deputies elected from the first region.[2][3]

District territory

[edit]

Under the National Electoral Institute's 2022 districting plan, which is to be used for the 2024, 2027 and 2030 federal elections,[4] the second district is located in the north-west of the state and comprises, in its entirety, the municipality of Ahome.[5]

The district's head town (cabecera distrital), where results from individual polling stations are gathered together and tallied, is the city of Los Mochis, the municipal seat of Ahome.[1]

1996–2022

Between 1996 and 2022, the 2nd district had the same configuration as under the 2022 plan, covering the municipality of Ahome.[8][9][7]

1978–1996

The districting scheme in force from 1978 to 1996 was the result of the 1977 electoral reforms, which increased the number of single-member seats in the Chamber of Deputies from 196 to 300. Under that plan, Sinaloa's seat allocation rose from five to nine.[6] The 2nd district comprised the municipality of Guasave.[10]
