Winter Olympics appearances (overview)

Hong Kong, a special administrative region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China, competed at the Winter Olympic Games for the first time at the 2002 Winter Olympics for Hong Kong in Salt Lake City, United States from 8 to 24 February 2002. This delegation, separated from the China team that consisted of athletes from mainland China only, competed under the name Hong Kong, China (Chinese: 中國香港). This was the SAR's first appearance at a Winter Olympic Games. The delegation consisted of two athletes, Tsoi Po Yee "Cordia" (蔡寶儀) and Christy Ren (任家貝). Both of them are short track speedskater.

Background

[edit]

Hong Kong began competing in the Summer Olympic Games in 1952, and have participated in every Summer Olympics since, excluding the boycotted 1980 Moscow Games.[1][2] Hong Kong was a British colony until the 1997 transfer of sovereignty from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China.[3] The SAR retained the right to send separate teams to the Olympics and other international sporting events that it had enjoyed under British rule.[4] In this 2002 Winter Olympics, Hong Kong made its Winter Olympic Games debut.[2] Hong Kong has never won a Winter Olympics medal.[2] The Hong Kong delegation to Salt Lake City consisted of two athletes, Tsoi Po Yee and Christy Ren. Both of them are short track speedskaters. Tsoi was chosen as the flag bearer for both the opening ceremony and the closing ceremony.[5]

Born in Canada, Tsoi Po Yee "Cordia" was 17 years old at the time of the Salt Lake City Olympics.[6] Christy Ren, born in Hong Kong, was 18 years old.[7] Both of them were making their Olympic debut and left the sporting world after the 2002 Winter Olympics. Both Tsoi and Ren participated in the women's 500 m and 1000 m short track. Ren also participated in women's 1500 m short track.
