Gambit, collected as Gambit: Thick As Thieves, is a 5-issue comic book limited series published by Marvel Comics between July 2022 and January 2023. Created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Sid Kotian, it is the third miniseries (and the sixth overall) starring the popular X-Men character Remy LeBeau / Gambit co-created by Claremont. The series follows the secret history of Remy and Ororo Monroe / Storm, from when she was turned into a child called "'Ro" by the Nanny, as the two face off against the Shadow King. The series received generally positive reviews from comic critics.
Plot
[edit]In an all-new adventure of everyone’s favorite thief, one thinks one knows all there possibly is to know about Remy LeBeau, the mutant called Gambit — but there’s still plenty up the sleeves of this ragin’ Cajun! Before he joined up with the X-Men, Gambit encountered a mysterious girl named ’Ro — the mutant Storm, regressed back to her childhood by the nefarious Nanny — and the two went up against the nefarious forces of the Shadow King! Now, more of their story is unveiled for the very first time, as Gambit finds his way on his path to becoming a heroic X-Man! But as Remy and ’Ro find themselves becoming a thorn in the side of mogul Solarz, the mercenary Warhawk is unleashed on our heroes!

[edit]The Gambit comic book series collected as Gambit: Thick As Thieves (and initially published as Gambit), written by Gambit co-creator Chris Claremont and expanding on the character's history with Storm, ran from July 2022 to January 2023.[1] In March 2023, the series was republished as a single omnibus edition.[2][3]

- Ororo "'Ro" Monroe / Storm – an thunder and lightning-controlling mutant goddess turned into a child by the Nanny.
- Amahl Farouk / Shadow King – A telepathic Egyptian mutant tyrant.
- Bacchae – A loyal servant of Hades and Hippolyta who assists Remy.
- Gabriella and Marissa DeCastro – a mother-daughter doctor-marine duo, the latter of whom 'Ro saved from a fire.
- Lila Cheney – A galactic mutant pop star and Remy's ex-girlfriend.
Critical reception
[edit]Gambit: Thick As Thieves received a mixed reception from critics. The series began with a lukewarm start,[4][5][6] with Logan Moore from ComicBook.com giving the first two issues a 6.0 rating, criticizing the lack of direction and the awkward dynamic between Gambit and a young Storm, though he praised the artwork by Sid Kotian.[7][8] By issue #3, the series showed improvement, with Moore noting it as the best installment so far.[9] Issue #4 earned the highest score of 9.0, as the story began to hit its stride and deliver more engaging content.[10] However, the final issue, Gambit #5, dropped back to a 6.0, as the conclusion felt underwhelming despite the series' earlier progress.[11]
