Summary

Description	English: Map of the United Kingdom 1831 general election results. Hatched colouring shows that a county constituency returned an equal number of members from both parties. County constituencies in England, Wales, and Ireland all returned two members. Hatched colouring on county constituencies therefore means that said constituency returned 1 member from each party whose colour is used. The exception to this is Yorkshire, which returned 4 members. Hatched colouring on Yorkshire therefore represents a return of equal numbers of members from both parties (2 Whigs and 2 Torys). Scottish county constituencies returned only 1 member each. Burgh constituency members are represented by circle segments. A circle broken into 2 segments therefore returned 2 members, whilst a circle without any segments returned a single member. Scottish burgh constituencies were different however, and burghs were grouped together in what were known as "Districts of Burghs." Under this arrangement several towns together elected a single member. This is represented on the map through the use of a slightly smaller circle. Anderson's map and [[:1784 General Election map.png\|this map by Marplesmustgo]]. Visions of Britain & the Old Maps Online collection, by the University of Portsmouth, JISC, and Klokan, also provided an invaluable source of information in terms of early constituency demarcations. Irish constituency boundaries in turn were largely based on this work by Irish Political Maps.
