Description
USS Constellation engages the French frigate la Vengeance, 2 February 1800. Artwork by Warren. Courtesy of the Mariner’s Museum, Bailey Collection, #250. On 2 February 1800, USS Constellation, Captain Thomas Truxtun, engaged the French frigate la Vengeance, commanded by Louis-Marie Picot, in a five-hour battle. Vengeance struck her colors several times, but was not observed by Constellation. With Constellation’s mast shot away, Vengeance eluded capture. NHHC Photograph Collection, NH 56701-KN (Color).
