English: Portrait of Thomas Raikes (1741–1813), British merchant and Governor of the Bank of England.

Sitting, directed to right, facing and looking to front, legs crossed, right hand holding letter addressed to personage, left hand on table to right, on which are inkstand and papers.

A Russian merchant; fifth son of Robert Raikes, who settled at Gloucester (a.d. 1757); for many years a director, and in 1797 Governor, of the Bank of England; a personal friend of Wilberforce and of the younger Pitt; died at Stanwell House, near Staines, Dec. 29, 1814. Thomas Raikes appears to have taken a house in Upper Grosvenor Street early in the 19th century, as in the Gentleman's Magazine obituaries of both him and his wife they are styled as "of Upper Grosvenor Street."
