The Death of General Wolfe on September 13, 1759 Depicting news of the British victory at the Plains of Abraham (Quebec City) as it reached the celebrated General James Wolfe before he expired, this painting is among the earliest done of this historic battle. Wolfe was not the only commander to lose his life that day. The French commander, Marquis Louis-Joseph de Montcalm, was also killed. Penny's work influenced the more famous version of The Death of General Wolfe by Benjamin West that was completed in 1770. |
