Summary

Description
English: Father of author Shimazaki Tōson, basis of the protagonist "Aoyama Hanzō" in the novel "Before the Dawn" (夜明け前, 1929). Scholar of kokugaku and disciple of Hirata Atsutane. The calligraphy immediately above and behind his left shoulder reads 「忠心奉國」 «chūshin hōkoku» - "[With] a sincere heart, offer [yourself] in service to your country".
