Summary

Description View from a 10 Squadron, RAAF, Short Sunderland circling the sinking SS Geraldine Mary, (of the A.N.D Company). The ship departed Botwood, Newfoundland, under the command of Captain George McCartney Sime on 19 July 1940 carrying 43 people and 610 tons of rolled news print bound for England. Fifteen days out, the ship was torpedoed by the German U-Boat U-52, captained by Otto Salman, resulting in the deaths of two crewmen and one passenger. The ship was abandoned and soon broke in two, capsizing and sinking not far from the Irish coast. The master and 27 survivors were picked up by a British escort vessel and landed at Methil on 8 August. Six survivors were rescued and landed at Liverpool and 14 others landed at Uig, Isle of Lewis. Among the survivors were four passengers. Captain Sime died less than a year later on another company ship, the Rothmere, which sank on 20 May 1941 between Greenland and Iceland.
