Summary

Description The Heavy Water Components Test Reactor, HWCTR, pronounced “Hector,” has become a classic image on Site. It was built in the early 1960s to prove that heavy water technology, which is what SRS reactors used, could be used to produce electricity. It was proven, but the technology was scrapped in this country, although it is the basis for Canada’s CANDU reactors. HWCTR was permanently sealed and is being decommissioned today.
