DescriptionPukekohe Racing Circuit (27847541093).jpg
On 29 August 1962 Pukekohe Borough Council held a special meeting on the proposed use of the racecourse for motor racing. A sealed racetrack was then built outside the horse-racing track, and the inaugural New Zealand Grand Prix was run on 5 January 1963. John Surtees of Great Britain won that race, driving a Lola, and the winner in 1964 was Bruce McLaren. Other winners included Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart and Keke Rosberg.
Pukekohe Park Raceway is still a popular venue for motorsport, and was upgraded in 2012-2013. The image is an aerial view of the first Grand Prix meeting in 1963. The inner light- coloured horse-racing track can be seen, and the black motor-racing track, with the hairpin and long back straight is also clearly visible.
