Summary

Description

The Funerary Mask of king Psusennes I on display at the 2012 King Tut Exhibit at Seattle's Pacific Science Center in Washington State, USA. This mask is a masterpiece of ancient Egyptian art and was made of gold, lapis lazuli and glass.

Psusennes I was one of the most powerful rulers of the Twenty-first Dynasty of Egypt and ruled for between 41 to 46 years from Tanis, Egypt where his fully intact tomb miraculously escaped detection by tomb robbers until being discovered in 1940 by French Egyptologists under Pierre Montet. This golden mask lay over his head, chest, and part of the shoulders of his mummy, as a layer of protection. The royal headdress with an uraeus and the divine false beard he wears indicates his royal and godly status. The use of gold, considered the flesh of the gods, reaffirmed his divinity in the afterlife.

Psusennes I was the son of the Theban High Priest Pinedjem I and Henuttawy, king Rameses XI's daughter by Tentamun. He married his sister Mutnedjmet. His children were his likely successor king Amenemope, Ankhefenmut and Isitemkheb.
