Summary

Description

miniature of King David in the 8th century illuminated manuscript "Psaultier de Montpeller" in French or "Psalter von Montpellier" in German, that was made in the then bavarian monastary of Mondsee near Salzburg in what is now Upper Austria, the codex is now found under the signature Ms. H409 in the Bibliothèque Interuniversitaire Médicine de Montpellier, France.

The instrument resembles a lyre, specifically a Germanic lyre or rotte. However, the edges don't go from the curved arch all the way down to the bottom of the instrument, and the area behind the strings at the top appears solid (no working space for the fingers from the back). Possibly, then, this is a psaltery.
