Description
English: Portrait of Mrs. Anne Blackburne, three-quarter length, in a white dress, a landscape beyond.

Seated under a tree, hands lightly clasped and resting on the knee in a very simple and natural attitude; in a white dress cut low, with sleeves to the elbow and finished wide frills, red sash round the waist, and very large white cap over her hair, which is fair and dressed loosely.

Sittings &c.: 1787, Feb. 27, March 7, 14, 29, April 19, 30, May 9, 11, 21, June 12, 15, Dec. 10 ; 1788, April 7, June 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 1, Dec. 18; 1789, Jan. 18; 1790, Feb. 22, March 8. Sent home Jan. 17, 1789; returned and sent home again, March 17, 1790. "The cap was added after the picture was finished, which is no doubt the reason why the picture was returned to Romney for a short time" (Letter from present owner). (BLACKBURNE, MRS.)

The sitter, Anne, the daughter of Samuel Rodbard Esq. of Evercreech, Somerset married on 19 April 1781, John Blackburne Esq., M.P. for Lancashire; died in 1823. Sittings are recorded in the artist's pocket book for 1787 and 1788 when the artist also painted a companion portrait of Anne's husband (op. cit., p. 13).
