Line 88 from the two surviving manuscripts of The Owl and the Nightingale shows the variable spelling of night in Middle English:

  • Þu sittest a dai & fliȝst a niȝt. (top, from the British Library)
  • Þu sittest a day and flyhst a niht, (bottom, from Jesus College, Oxford)
  • Translated by Susanna Fein as, "You roost by day and fly by night,"
