Process:

  1. Export the mermaid to a PDF with: npx -p @mermaid-js/mermaid-cli mmdc --pdfFit -i input.mermaid -o output.pdf -t neutral -b transparent
  2. Open the PDF with Inkscape, using the internal import option. Then save the file as an SVG.
  3. Pass the SVG through SVGO, with SVGOMG or the CLI

(Steps 1 and 2 are needed to workaround an issue with Mermaid's SVG export functionality - see mermaid issues #2102, #2485 and #2688)
