Summary

Description

Letter from Abraham Bogardus, on his personal letterhead. 5.5 x 8.5 in, March 22, 1887.

Transcription. bold text is in type, all other text is hand-written. Layout is approximated. Things where I'm not sure are put in brackets with a ? after, things where it's obvious what's meant, but not clear from the handwriting lack the ?. There is one bit labelled "[squiggle]". I think that's the fairest description of what's written there, but see notes:

B. [N?]. Austen Esq
    Dear Sir
        A notice from you
that I had been elected as a[1] non-resident
member of your society was a surprise
as well as a gratification to me. I had
not supposed that my name was known
to any extent in the great state of Texas.

I enclose and mail with this
some photographs of eminent men
and with them your humble serv[ant][2]

If I can be of any service to
your society you h[av]e only to command
me

        Respectfully yours[3]

        A. Bogardus

  1. This is how it's given in the partial transcription given on the source page. It's a bit more of a squiggle than a fully readable "as a" to my eyes, but I'm less familiar with Bogardus' handwriting.
  2. I presume this means he enclosed a photo of himself.
  3. Very sloppy "y" at the end of the first word, ditto the "rs" at the end of the second, but I don't think there's any real doubt of the intended text here,
  4. The squiggle's presumably the equivalent of "st", as in May 1st, but looks more like an underlined M over two dots
  5. I believe this is a newer branch studio, in contradiction to the "No Branch Studios" printed above.
