Summary

Description

This elaborate wood, gold leaf and faience gilded jewellery box from the Tomb of Yuya and Thuya bears the cartouche or royal name of king Amenhotep III of the Eighteenth_Dynasty_of_Egypt’s New Kingdom period. Amenhotep III was one of the most powerful kings of this dynasty when Egypt was ruling an Empire and prosperous and he was the father of his successor Akhenaten and grandfather of Tutankhamun. Yuya and Thuya’s KV46 tomb was penetrated by tomb robbers in antiquity but they only had time to steal the jewels from the burial before they fled and the tomb was resealed by the tomb guards thereby preserving this remarkable furniture until the modern era when Egyptologists finally rediscovered the tomb.
