Français : Seules régions inexplorées à la fin du 19e siècle, les deux pôles suscitent une rude compétition, à la fois scientifique, géopolitique, impérialiste et sportive. À son retour en 1909, le succès de Robert Peary, contesté, est définitivement reconnu sur la base de la documentation qu’il rapporte. En réalité, le pôle Nord est un point mathématique sans support physique, situé à 90 degrés de latitude et une longitude indifférente. L’exploit est immortalisé, dûment enregistré par une photographie qui sert de preuve et sera maintes fois reproduite. L’image est prise, et bien sûr composée, dans une zone arbitrairement choisie dans les 18 miles autour du point calculé.
