Summary
DescriptionAlberton, between 1862 and 1875.jpg |
English: Alberton began life as a two-storey timber farm house for Allan Kerr Taylor and his first wife Patty. Erected as the centrepiece of their 500 acre Mt Albert country estate, the house had at least 11 rooms and a cellar. Patty died in 1864 and 16 months later Allan remarried Sophia Louisa Davis. The family’s income shifted from farming to land sales and investments and it is around this time, in the 1870s, that the house was probably converted into a fashionable mansion. Additions included an eastern wing with ballroom and a set of exotic corner towers with curved, ogee-shaped roofs, which may have reflected Allan's Indian upbringing. |
