Summary

Description

English: Idealised view of an 18th Sugar Plantation in the West Indes, by Paolo Fumagalli, 1830. After an engraving of the Encyclopédie by Diderot and d’Alembert (1751-1772).

Image content: We can see at the top left the master's house, located high up and dominating all the facilities. Below are the slave huts, organized around rectilinear axes, the famous rue cases-nègres (negro-huts street). On the right of the image are the buildings dedicated to sugar production: water mill, connected to the sugar factory housing the boilers. Above, the purgery and the oven are represented, buildings dedicated to the refining and drying of sugar. In the center of the image, we can see the "savannah", part of the uncultivated estate, in the foreground, and the cane fields in the background.

In this idealized representation of plantations, the forced labor of slaves is deliberately not shown. We can even see in the foreground a black slave sinning.
